Victor Perry – Missing (Everything But The Girl – Cover)

victorperry_missing

Back in July, I posted about up-and-coming talented indie artist Victor Perry. He just released an amazing cover of Missing (Everything But The Girl.) I have always loved that song and Victor’s arrangement is beautiful. It originally appeared on Bill Smith’s blog post and it’s so great I just had to share it.

Bassett – Ghost Hwy (EP)

josh-bassett-desert-ghost

Indie psychedelic folk duo Bassett have a new EP Ghost Hwy out Friday, Nov. 18. Bassett is Josh Bassett (Multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter) and Tak Ozaki (Bassist.) Josh is from New Jersey and Tak is from Kobe, Japan – they met through the LA Club Scene.

Since uniting, the duo have spent the majority of their band’s life on the road. They have played extensively throughout the West, East and Midwest, fulfilling their dream of spreading deep, psychedelic musical vibrations while seeking out some of America’s culinary gems along the way.

Bassett have always strayed from the beaten path. It is this chronic search for identity, peace and creative release that led them to the vast landscapes of the California desert which served as inspiration for Ghost Hwy. Their pilgrimages to Joshua Tree and the surrounding areas acted as springboard for their new, introspective and trance-like material which explores uncharted emotional territory.

Josh, who was processing some dark personal history at the time explains “I was going through a period of intense shyness so I wasn’t cranking up the amps…I was tinkering on acoustic instruments and soul searching with my voice.”

The resulting EP is filled with a depth and rawness that entices the listener into its strange sonic world. While Bassett’s music still sits in the vintage psych sound of Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Nirvana & Nick Drake, Ghost Hwy is harder to pin down with its uncommon chords and visceral balladry. Their single “Away” is the most experimental track on Ghost Hwy and can be streamed below. The EP is really exciting and unique and showcases the exceptional talents of Bassett.

“I often feel like an outcast” notes Josh. “Not just because our music doesn’t click into a current genre but because we have always gone down our own road and that’s what we offer…A genuine reflection of our journey through the human experience.”

Jamil Kassam – Rise Now

jamilkassam

Indie artist Jamil Kassam has an inspiring new lyric video for “Rise Now.” It has a powerful message of believing in yourself. The lyrics “Stand up proud/Wake up now/Don’t do anything in between” are appropriate especially today, our election day in the U.S.

Jamil Kassam is a Belgian singer/songwriter, born and raised in the Ivory Coast, with an Indian background. Jamil says:

“As a songwriter, I began writing music to unite people. Artists such as Tiken Jah Fakoly, Emeli Sande or Nneka inspire me. Their songs raised awareness across nations, advocating peace around the world, and shedding light on its ills. Traveling the world gave me the unique opportunity to connect with many different cultures. In every city I have visited, music was always the universal language of the people.”

Amy Guess – 10 Times Out Of 10

amyguess
Las Vegas electro-pop singer Amy Guess has a new video for “10 Times Out Of 10.” It’s from her upcoming EP of the same title out soon. The really cool video is 80’s themed and is reminiscent of that era.

Amy Guess shared this about her EP:

“I have spent the last well over a year on this music, it is the most honest and vulnerable I have ever been with my music and it’s taken me a lot of writing and breaking down my own walls to let it out. It’s songs about my love, songs about lost love, songs written on my worst days and songs written on my happiest, it has been therapeutic and it’s been painful, it’s been frightening and it’s been thrilling, and letting it out of the long closed cage is quite scary but along with that fear I couldn’t be more excited to share this music with you all, music I have written for you all and I hope you all find strength and connection in these songs the way I have in writing them. “10 times out of 10”, why this title? Well it came down to one of the huge reasons I’ve continued pursuing music and that is my rock, my shoulder, my 10 times out of 10, my ride or die homie, my love – his support and belief in me has been my anchor through my journey and so the song I wrote about him had to be the title track and the title for the EP. I also loved it as the title because throughout any of my lowest moments and moments where I believed in myself the least, music is something I could never imagine letting go, no matter the fear, doubt and insecurities in pursuing it the fear of letting go and not pursuing it left me feeling even more paralyzed, empty and afraid. Music also my 10 times out of 10, I don’t have a back up plan, I never have, it’s not what happens during my pursuit that matters, what matters is I will always continue to pursue it for the love and the inner deepest need and desire to create and make music.”

Amy Guess will be playing a show in Las Vegas on October 18th at Gold Spike on their Down & Derby night.

Tamtam – Old Soul

Based in L.A. and raised between the Middle East and the West, Tamtam strives to serve as a musical bridge between these two regions. Her profound lyrics and her strong message stand out in today’s sea of music artists, where she presents to music lovers around the world a message of empowerment that encourages all people to use their voice to create positive change.

Her musical journey continues with her latest single Old Soul. The video for Old Soul is like a short film with the song as its soundtrack. Old Soul is a song about not letting time dictate how we feel about ourselves or what we can do with our lives, because it’s never too late. This song displays Tamtam’s talents, not only as a singer, but also as a strong songwriter with a unique and unifying musical energy.

Saint Adeline – Status Quo

saintadeline

NYC-based Saint Adeline is a close-knit indie band consisting of siblings Drew, Kasie and Chloe Gasparini. Though they’ve each pursued different outlets for artistic expression – Drew as a composer, Kasie as an actress, and Chloe as a solo artist – music has always brought them together, and Saint Adeline merges their eclectic passions into one beautiful sound.

A lifetime of practice became a reality October 2015, when the siblings finally joined forces to form Saint Adeline. The formation of the group happened almost by chance, when Drew asked Kasie and Chloe to join him on stage at Webster Hall. The chemistry between them was undeniable, and they knew right then that they had something special. To the trio, Saint Adeline is home. They write from the heart, they write from experience. The siblings’ bond solidify and strengthen their band and music. Given their varied backgrounds they each bring something different to the sound of the group.

“Status Quo” is a lively, harmony-filled folk-rock song off of Saint Adeline’s upcoming self-titled EP. Their sound is reminiscient of The Lumineers. Saint Adeline recently played at The Highline Ballroom and have an upcoming show at Rockwood Music Hall, one of my favorite venues, on December 15.

The Grand Undoing – Sparks Rain Down From The Lights of Love

grandundoing

The Grand Undoing’s sophomore LP, Sparks Rain Down From The Lights of Love, releases today on Secret Candy Rock Records. Their sound is highly unique yet reminiscent of 70’s era David Bowie, Elvis Costello, the pop of The Raspberries and angst of Morrissey.

Seth Goodman, who records as The Grand Undoing, has two extreme passions in life: drinking sparkling wine and creating psychedelic post-rock Americana confronting alienation and mortality. This strange mix, the bubbly and brooding, creates an incredible musical cocktail.

An only child, Goodman leaned hard on his record player while coming of age just outside of Boston. The area’s free-form college radio and vibrant club scene also had a profound effect. The final piece fell into place later in life when Goodman developed a deep affinity for classic country and roots music. All these influences would swirl and collide with his deeply entrenched outsider’s sensibility to form The Grand Undoing’s distinctive sound.

When reflecting on the heady topics presented in the new material, Goodman explains that the end result is meant to uplift and inspire. He hopes The Grand Undoing’s music will provide a cinematic escape, make great driving music, or be the perfect accompaniment to a bottle of sparkling wine.

Kylie Odetta – Dangerous Woman / This Is What You Came For / Give Me Love (MASH UP)

kylieodetta

Today singer-songwriter Kylie Odetta released her new video, a mash-up of current pop songs done in her own jazzy and blues style. It’s a really cool effect and produced seamlessly. I really love Kylie’s intepretation. Kylie describes the process of making the video:

“Making the arrangement for this song and then recording the video was a really unique and collaborative experience for me. I found it very inspiring to take songs that have already been produced in the way the artist intended and then completely create a new vibe and sound. It’s a much more emotional and dark feel than the original songs and having some super swells on the electric guitar as well as select drum parts adds to the dramatic pull of the song. I hope that people dig it just as much as I do!”

I wrote about Kylie back in February, when she released her EP High Dreamer. You can read the profile here.

High Dreamer is available on iTunes and SoundCloud.

Fun. – Carry On

I’m so inspired by this song by the band Fun. I’ve had a difficult week and tonight I was looking through songs trying to find something with a little grit to it to inspire me – I have about 7 blog posts queued up that I must get working on. Sometimes you find that perfect song for exactly how you’re feeling and this is it. Lyrics below:

Well I woke up to the sound of silence
The cars were cutting like knives in a fist fight
And I found you with a bottle of wine
Your head in the curtains
And heart like the Fourth of July

You swore and said
We are not
We are not shining stars
This I know
I never said we are

Though I’ve never been through hell like that
I’ve closed enough windows
To know you can never look back

If you’re lost and alone
Or you’re sinking like a stone
Carry on
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground
Carry on

Carry on, carry on

So I met up with some friends
At the edge of the night
At a bar off 75
And we talked and talked
About how our parents will die
All our neighbours and wives

But I like to think
I can cheat it all
To make up for the times I’ve been cheated on
And it’s nice to know
When I was left for dead
I was found and now I don’t roam these streets
I am not the ghost you want of me

If you’re lost and alone
Or you’re sinking like a stone
Carry on
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground
Carry on

Woah
My head is on fire
But my legs are fine
Cause after all they are mine
Lay your clothes down on the floor
Close the door
Hold the phone
Show me how
No one’s ever gonna stop us now

Cause we are
We are shining stars
We are invincible
We are who we are
On our darkest day
When we’re miles away
So we’ll come
We will find our way home

If you’re lost and alone
Or you’re sinking like a stone
Carry on
May your past be the sound
Of your feet upon the ground
Carry on

Carry on, carry on

Victor Perry – 4 A.M. Nostalgia (EP)

victorperry3

Indie singer-songwriter Victor Perry defies genres in his romantic and heartbreaking EP 4 A.M. Nostalgia. At 22, the Thomasville, Georgia native combines rural gospel roots with modern influences of Adele, Sia and Coldplay to create his unique voice.

Lead track “Rainbows” displays Perry’s lyrical talents as he takes you on a musical journey through his broken heart. Perry’s vocal range seems to be endless. Love is complicated, and saying goodbye is sometimes inevitable, which Perry shows on the track “Leave.” “Lighthouse” uses lovely metaphors for his tale of a girl’s complicated feelings and is my favorite track on the EP. “It’s hard to imagine a you without me/Run through my veins and let me be,” sings Perry on the final track “Nostalgia.” It’s a perfect end to the EP as Perry wants to be free of heartbreak and nostalgia that is so relatable.
